A leading provider of innovative laser systems to help people in various global markets, including but not limited to renewables, microelectronics, research, life science, automotive, and medicine.

We seek an experienced Senior / Lead Systems Design Engineer to coordinate system design primarily from the perspective of the underlying and customer-facing control system.

This opening comes at a time of exciting growth for the Company, with an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary engineering team and shape the next generation of cutting-edge laser products.

You will work as part of the development team from the feasibility phase through the full manufacturing release cycle. Successful candidates will develop a level of understanding that spans across the system design to become a vital expert in the laser system.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES.

  • Ownership of control system design reliability analysis, including documented failure mode analysis.

  • Analysis of system adherence to safety standards.

  • Critically reviewing design choices with the needs of all stakeholders considered from the engineering team, through production, to the customer and field support.

  • Working with prototype systems and critically looking for any improvements through both empirical and paper-based detailed analysis.

  • Leading or actively being involved in root cause analysis of any failures that occur in the early manufacturing cycle.

  • Working closely with team members, especially optical, software and electronics teams.

  • Acting as the technology conduit between the software/electronics group and the optical teams.

  • Owning a synoptic view of the system design whilst being part of the teams that perform the detailed developments.

  • Troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis for prototype units through the development process.

  • Contributing to troubleshooting and coordinating corrective actions for manufacturing or field issues on production-released systems.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Physics or Engineering, or similar BSc degree, or equivalent demonstrable experience.

  • Experience in strong problem-solving skills to investigate cross-disciplinary issues with some root-cause analysis methodology.

  • Tenacious approach to problem solving with a desire to get to the demonstrable root of the problem.

  • Demonstrable experience in problem-solving of electronics / software / optical issues.

  • General understanding of electronics and control systems.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and manage priorities.

  • Detail-oriented, able to take general instructions and seek out all the elements needed to complete the assigned tasks.

  • Ability to drive a project within the organisation.

  • Comfortable working on your own to investigate issues outside of your comfort zone.

  • Working with teams with competing needs and the ability to describe complex technologies across disciplines.

  • Ownership of control system design requirements. Taking information from other disciplines (mainly optical) and defining system functional block diagrams, design constraints, and control algorithms.

  • Working with design personnel to adapt requirements and carry out final testing.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • A detailed understanding of some aspects of laser designs. These could include ultrashort laser pulses, mode-locking techniques, UV generation, fiber laser systems, solid state laser oscillators and amplifiers.

  • Coding using a text-based coding language (e.g., Python, C#, MATLAB) for data analysis or instrumentation control.

  • Basic electronics knowledge.
