PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC Scotland News is the nation's leading news service on television, radio, online, and social media. With audiences at the heart of what we do, we want to produce the best original journalism; reach new and different audiences and broaden our storytelling.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

We want to tell the high-quality stories that really matter to people across Scotland. We want to combine breaking and developing news with accessible explanation of events. We are building a story-led newsroom with a focus on bigger impact content for our online audience. As a Senior Journalist in BBC Scotland’s Mobile and Online news team, you will be key to shaping the changes we want to see.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • As a Senior Journalist in the BBC Scotland news online team you will work in a shift system that runs across seven days of the week covering the hours of 6am to 11pm.
  • You will commission, sub-edit and publish written stories and videos and provide constructive feedback to online journalists, on-air reporters and correspondents.
  • The job will involve guiding colleagues – whether they be apprentices or very experienced journalists – to deliver a whole range of stories from breaking news to those with complex and data-rich themes.
  • In this senior role you will need to understand the importance of impartiality; have extensive editorial experience; sound judgement and be assertive in decision making.
  • You will need to communicate well with the wider BBC Scotland news operation and be the team’s representative and voice at core editorial and project meetings.
  • When speaking to members of the public and responding to feedback from our audience you will be courteous, clear and understand you are representing the best the BBC can be.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • You will join a senior team which is responsible for our main Scotland index; the Scottish politics and Scottish business pages plus six regional indexes covering the country’s mainland and island communities.
  • A good knowledge of Scotland and its institutions is vital to carrying out this role to a high standard.
  • You will commission, sub-edit and publish written stories and videos to the news website and provide helpful areas for improvement to online journalists and correspondents alike.
  • We are looking for someone who can handle the pressures of breaking news and be assured in delivering unrivalled content which is both accurate and speedy.
  • You will need to be comfortable and confident that at times you are going to be the most senior member of the news online team on shift.
  • You will be able to demonstrate that you can adapt to the ever-growing demands of a digital working environment; embrace technological change and be quick to understand the latest trends in delivering news.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
