Head of Electronic Engineering - #1796266
NHS Scotland
Date: 16 hours ago
City: Glasgow
Contract type: Full time
Work schedule: Full day

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday.
This is a highly rewarding role that provides opportunities for varied and challenging work as the Head of Electronic Engineering for the Medical Devices Unit (MDU), a multi-disciplinary clinical engineering team supporting innovation projects to improve patient diagnosis, treatment and care. MDU staff also provide equipment repair, maintenance and calibration services.
The successful candidate will lead a small team of electronic engineers delivering a range of services in support of the wider objectives of the MDU.
You will manage the design and development of medical electronic systems to deliver innovative and cost-effective healthcare solutions as part of a wider initiative which focuses on translational research and the development of collaborative projects between NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, academia and industry. You will ensure that medical device technical documentation complies with the MDU’s ISO 13485 certified Quality Management System (QMS).
You will also manage a calibration service for medical test and diagnostic equipment in compliance with an ISO 55001 certified QMS and will explore service improvement opportunities including UKAS accreditation and service expansion.
As the lead for electronic engineering in the Department of Clinical Physics and Bioengineering (DCPB), you will provide expert advice and guidance to clinical and technical staff and will regularly update your technical and regulatory knowledge as it applies to electronic systems with healthcare applications.
You will be involved in the strategic development of the MDU and will also take a leading role in the development of its services and systems. You will be a committed, energetic and self-motivated person with good team-working skills and excellent communication and presentation skills.
You will be able to demonstrate the following essential attributes: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; an excellent grasp of state of the art analogue and digital electronics techniques and their application; sound knowledge of electronic design, prototyping and production using industry standard tools; experience of working under Quality Management Systems in a safety critical environment; practical, in-depth experience of a broad range of complex electronic instrumentation; project management of complex electronic design and development projects; and training of technical and scientific staff.
Ideally you will have experience of medical equipment and instrumentation and related regulations and standards.
You will have an MSc/MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or other appropriate discipline from a recognised University; or BSc/BEng with profile of knowledge and training equivalent to MSc/MEng. Preferably, you will be a Chartered Engineer, registered with a professional industry body and the Engineering Council.
You will normally work 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site meetings and events. This is a permanent position with a competitive salary and generous holiday entitlement.
