Operations Planner – Palmer & Co

Glasgow - Office-Based

£35,000 - £40,000 depending on experience

Have you scheduled labour and resources in a field-based or operational environment? Are you someone who sorts things over the phone rather than over email? Are you looking to join a growing business where the scheduling function is yours to shape?

This role could be for you.

Who We Are

We have been operating in Scotland since 1932, and the business looks nothing like it did when it started. Today we run an access platform fleet that includes truck-mounted platforms up to 70 metres, rope access teams, and contracts that range from commercial window cleaning PPM programmes to inspections and other work at height maintenance tasks. We are family-run, we are growing, and the last 18 months have seen some of the most significant capital investment in our history.

The Role

The Centre of Operations

Every field operative, every piece of equipment, every client commitment flows through the Operations Planner. This is not a back-office function - it is the operational nerve centre of the business. You will be building and managing schedules across a varied job mix, from Planned Preventative Maintenance programmes to emergency deployments, matching the right people and equipment to the right jobs, and keeping field teams and clients aligned when things change - which they will.

The Build

We are growing, and the scheduling function needs to grow with us. There is an opportunity here to shape how scheduling works in this business - to improve processes, bring more structure, and potentially build a small team around you as we scale. If you want a role where you are maintaining something that already works perfectly, this is not it. If you want to leave a mark, it might be exactly right.

The Communication

The way you communicate matters as much as anything else here. We need someone who picks up the phone proactively and instinctively - who builds real relationships with field teams, reads the room, and knows whether a situation calls for a firm nudge, a bit of reassurance, or a laugh.

What You Need

Scheduling in the Real World

You have done this in a field services, facilities management, or trades environment - somewhere with real operational complexity, not just a calendar to manage. You know what it feels like when three things go wrong at once and you have to reprioritise quickly and smartly.

Judgement Over Process

You have worked in a smaller, faster-moving environment where there wasn’t always a rigid process to tell you what to do. You made calls, owned them, and moved on. Candidates who have only ever worked in large corporate scheduling functions with extensive support structures might find the pace here a bit of a struggle.

Genuine People Skills

You’re great with people, and it’s one of the most enjoyable parts of your job! You build rapport quickly, you adapt your communication style instinctively, and people trust you because you follow through and do what you say you’re going to. The field teams here need to know that the person coordinating their day actually knows them and understands their work.

Self-Awareness Under Pressure

You are a problem-solver, but you know when a problem is beyond you and you flag it fast. Sitting on something and hoping it resolves itself is not an option in an operational business - the willingness to put your hand up quickly is genuinely valued here, not seen as a weakness.

System Literacy

Experience with Big Change CRM is an advantage. Familiarity with any field service management or job scheduling platform is essential. We use Microsoft Office and also BrightHR, which you’ll use to plan around annual leave/absences.

What We Offer

  • £35,000 - £40,000 depending on experience
  • 31 days annual leave inclusive of Christmas shutdown
  • Buy or sell up to 5 days of additional leave per year
  • Standard pension contribution
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Office-based, 0800-1600 - no on-call, no travel requirement
