About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Direct Sales, Northern Europe, our Business Development Manager delivers excellence across the territory and makes sure every customer receives a first-class experience. This is a role for someone who wants to own a territory (Northern England or Scotland): driving rapid market expansion while protecting and growing a significant book of business.

It calls for exceptional account management, sharp negotiation, and the leadership to set your own direction. You will grow revenue while keeping a close eye on margin, get in front of customers regularly, and use market insight to stay ahead of the competition. This is a field-based role with a home office, so you will live within the territory (Northern England or Scotland) and travel frequently to clients.

What you will do:

  • Achieve annual growth targets while monitoring discounting and gross margin in line with business expectations
  • Manage and develop existing accounts to increase value, and proactively target competitor accounts for growth
  • Meet customers face to face on a regular basis and identify the right decision makers and key markets
  • Analyse account data and buying patterns, and forecast regularly to senior management
  • Keep CRM and ERP data accurate, and represent us at exhibitions and industry events
  • Share market feedback that helps shape our business direction

Your Profile

You are a self-starter who works well independently and within a dynamic team. Highly organised and able to manage your own diary, you bring a methodical, right-first-time approach, strong emotional intelligence, and the interpersonal skills to build lasting internal and external relationships.

You bring:

  • A proven track record of moving business through a sales pipeline to close and consistently hitting growth targets
  • A science degree or equivalent, ideally in microbiology, plus a sales or account management qualification
  • Strong negotiation, presentation, and communication skills, with clear commercial awareness
  • Proficiency with Microsoft platforms and the ability to work with CRM and ERP systems (e.g. HubSpot and Priority)
  • Advantageous: microbiology, cleanroom, or GMP knowledge and experience in a regulated industry
  • A clean UK driving licence, and willingness to travel frequently across the territory

What We Offer

Salary and further benefits are discussed at interview. Our benefits include:

  • 25 days' holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays, increasing with service (an extra day at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 years)
  • Auto-enrolment pension scheme with a 5% company contribution
  • Life Assurance at 2x salary for pension scheme members, plus Company Sick Pay
  • Refer a Friend scheme – earn up to £750 for successful referrals
  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme for you and your immediate family, including 6 free counselling sessions per issue per year
  • Personal Accident cover (after 5 years) and Group Income Protection (after 10 years)
