The Opportunity
Entropyst Ltd is growing its engineering team and is looking for a multidisciplinary R&D Engineer to join our R&D facility in Glasgow. We are developing and commercialising electrified reactor technologies for the conversion of gaseous feedstocks into high-value carbon materials and other products.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of experimental engineering, product development and computational modelling, helping move technologies from laboratory validation towards pilot-scale deployment and commercial products. This is a hands-on role for someone comfortable building and testing hardware, interpreting experimental results, and developing engineering models to understand and optimise systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, commission and experimentally test laboratory and pilot-scale reactor systems.
- Undertake experimental work involving thermal, chemical, mechanical, electrical and gas-handling systems.
- Develop and optimise reactor components and supporting balance-of-plant.
- Plan experiments and undertake data acquisition, analysis and interpretation.
- Develop engineering and system-level models using Python, MATLAB or similar tools.
- Undertake process modelling, mass and energy balances, techno-economic analysis and system optimisation.
- Support life-cycle assessment (LCA) and environmental-performance modelling.
- Develop or support multiphysics models, where relevant, including thermal, fluid-flow, reaction and electrical phenomena.
- Translate research results into practical engineering designs, prototypes and commercial products.
- Prepare technical documentation, reports, risk assessments and engineering deliverables.
- Support technology demonstrations, customer projects and collaborative R&D programmes.
- Contribute, where appropriate, to Entropyst's engineering and technical consultancy activities.
Essential Background
- PhD, EngD or equivalent research/industrial experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Energy Engineering, Materials Engineering or a closely related discipline. Exceptional candidates without a doctorate may also be considered where they can demonstrate at least five years of substantial relevant industrial R&D and product-development experience.
- Existing right to work in the UK for the duration of the role is essential. Entropyst is not currently able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
- Strong hands-on experimental engineering experience.
- Experience taking technology beyond fundamental research towards product, prototype or process development.
- Strong quantitative and theoretical engineering skills.
- Experience with scientific or engineering programming and modelling, ideally using Python, MATLAB or equivalent.
- Ability to independently design experiments, analyse data and solve multidisciplinary engineering problems.
- Strong technical communication, documentation and collaborative working skills.
- Ability and willingness to work primarily on-site at Entropyst's Glasgow R&D facility.
- Multilingual, with professional working proficiency in English and at least one additional language.
Highly Desirable Experience
- Reactor engineering, thermochemical processes, catalysis or high-temperature systems.
- Methane pyrolysis, hydrogen, ammonia, carbon materials or related technologies.
- CFD or multiphysics modelling using COMSOL, ANSYS or similar tools.
- Process/system modelling, techno-economic analysis and/or life-cycle assessment using tools such as openLCA or SimaPro.
- Gas handling, pressure systems and laboratory or pilot-plant commissioning.
- DSEAR, ATEX, hazardous-area assessment and safe operation.
- HAZOP, engineering risk assessment or process-safety experience.
- Industrial product-development experience.
- Experience within an engineering, deep-tech or technology startup.
- Experience in Innovate UK project delivery.
- Entrepreneurship, technology commercialisation, consultancy or customer-facing technical work.
Professional Development
Applicants who are already Chartered Engineers (CEng), or who are actively progressing towards Chartership through an appropriate professional institution, are particularly welcome. Entropyst intends to support relevant continuing professional development and progression towards Chartership, alongside opportunities to contribute to commercial engineering and technical consultancy work.
Salary, Benefits & Employment Terms
Gross Salary: £40,000–£50,000 per annum, depending on experience and technical background.
- Workplace pension provision in accordance with applicable UK auto-enrolment requirements.
- Paid annual leave and public/bank-holiday entitlement meeting at least the applicable statutory UK minimum.
- Statutory family-related leave, sick pay and other employment rights in accordance with applicable UK law.
- Relevant professional development, technical training and safety-certification support where agreed for the role.
- Exposure to technology commercialisation, scale-up, collaborative R&D and customer-facing engineering projects.
- Potential participation in a future employee equity/options scheme, subject to company arrangements and eligibility.
Probation: The appointment will include an initial six-month probationary period, with structured performance and development reviews. Any employment arrangements will be set out in the employment contract.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Entropyst wants to build a multidisciplinary team with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We particularly welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented in engineering, energy and climate-tech R&D. Appointment decisions will be based on the skills, experience and suitability required for the role, with preference given to candidates who obtained their PhD from an institution outside the UK.
Reasonable adjustments can be made during the recruitment process and employment in accordance with applicable requirements.
