Storage Software Engineer
- Rate: £500 per day, Inside IR35
- Location: Glasgow

Your new company
You will be joining a leading global financial services organisation within its technology function. The team is seeking a multi-talented Software Developer to design and develop highly available and scalable solutions supporting enterprise storage infrastructure and associated technology.
Your new role
This is a development-focused role combining strong programming capability with exposure to enterprise storage and Linux environments. You will design and develop solutions used to manage large-scale storage infrastructure, including provisioning, monitoring, alerting, auditing and inventory management. You'll also contribute to the architecture and integration of storage solutions, work with third-party vendors, and develop in-house applications forming part of the wider technology platform. The role requires a minimum of 3 days per week onsite in Glasgow, with a face-to-face interview in Glasgow forming a mandatory part of the interview process. Candidates based locally or within a reasonable commuting distance are strongly preferred.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop highly available and scalable software solutions.
- Develop applications supporting storage provisioning, monitoring, alerting, auditing and inventory management.
- Develop in-house applications forming part of the wider technology platform.
- Architect and integrate storage solutions, including working with third-party vendors.
- Develop tools supporting problem management and preventative maintenance.
- Contribute to alert and capacity management solutions.
- Work with storage virtualisation, automation and provisioning technologies.
- Work with distributed and scale-out file systems and software-defined storage.
- Contribute to infrastructure automation and observability.
- Troubleshoot effectively across operating systems, networks and storage.
- Work collaboratively as part of a global team.
- Understand customer requirements and clearly communicate appropriate technical solutions.
What you'll need to succeed
The successful candidate will bring advanced programming capability combined with intermediate or above experience in storage and/or Linux.
Essential skills and experience
- Strong software development experience.
- Advanced programming capability in Python and/or Perl.
- Experience with SDLC best practices on large software development projects.
- Good knowledge of computer science fundamentals.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Good English communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise multiple projects and objectives.
- Intermediate or above experience in storage and/or Linux.
Desirable skills and experience
- Object-oriented programming concepts.
- SQL programming.
- Experience deploying, operating or administering Linux in an enterprise environment, particularly RHEL.
- Knowledge of storage technologies including Fibre Channel, iSCSI, SCSI, NFS, CIFS, POSIX and Object Storage.
- Knowledge of SAS, SATA, NVMe, SSD, RAID and Erasure Coding.
- Distributed and scale-out storage experience.
- Knowledge of file systems and high-availability approaches.
- Working knowledge of databases.
- Understanding of networking protocols and connectivity.
- Enterprise UNIX/RHEL or Windows Server architecture experience.
- Container experience including Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes or Docker.
- Cloud exposure across Azure, AWS or Google Cloud.
- Understanding of client/server and scale-out architectures.
- Knowledge of virtualisation, performance and capacity management.
- Troubleshooting skills across operating systems, networking and storage.
- Exposure to technologies such as NetApp 7mode/cDOT/Engenio, IBM Spectrum Scale/GPFS, HDS Storage Arrays/HCP, EMC Atmos, Brocade SAN/FOS and Veritas Storage Foundation Suite.
- Knowledge of Sybase or DB2.
