About the Programme

This is an exciting opportunity to support a major UK Defence and nuclear programme, delivering strategically important infrastructure that supports the Armed Forces and wider UK Defence capabilities.

The programme involves significant investment in complex infrastructure, supporting both current operations and the development of future capability.

Defence & Nuclear Infrastructure

Working within a highly regulated environment, the programme is responsible for the planning, development and delivery of major infrastructure requirements.

Key areas include:

• Major capital programme and project delivery
• Estate and infrastructure services
• Strategic estate and asset management
• Planning and development of future infrastructure requirements
• Supply chain and stakeholder management
• Delivery across complex Defence and nuclear environments

You’ll provide engineering leadership, technical challenge and assurance across complex programmes, helping ensure engineering solutions meet the required standards and are supported by robust technical evidence.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering governance, standards and technical assurance
• Review designs, specifications and technical submissions
• Assess design maturity, technical risk and engineering evidence
• Oversee requirements, configuration control and technical change
• Work closely with programme teams, customers and supply chain partners
• Identify and escalate technical risks, issues and deviations
• Support the development of engineering capability, SMEs and SQEP
• Drive continuous improvement and share engineering best practice

This is a technical leadership and assurance role rather than a programme delivery position, offering the opportunity to influence engineering standards and quality across major Defence and nuclear infrastructure programmes.

Essential Experience & Skills

• Strong engineering leadership experience within Defence nuclear, civil nuclear, major infrastructure, marine or another highly regulated environment.
• Experience in engineering governance, design assurance, technical reviews and configuration control.
• Proven ability to review and challenge multi-disciplinary design and engineering outputs.
• Strong understanding of technical risk, design maturity, requirements traceability and engineering change.
• Experience working across engineering, programme, safety, quality, commercial and supply chain teams.
• Confident providing technical advice, challenge and assurance to senior stakeholders and programme teams.
• Degree qualified in Engineering, Science, Mathematics or another relevant technical discipline.
• Chartered or working towards Chartered status with a relevant professional body.
• Ability to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance.

Desirable

• Experience within Defence nuclear, licensed/authorised sites or safety-significant infrastructure.
• Knowledge of systems engineering, requirements and configuration management.
• Experience supporting Design Authority, Technical Authority or equivalent governance arrangements.
• Experience in design reviews, independent technical assessment or gateway assurance.
• Exposure to NEC4 or other major programme delivery contracts.
• Lead Auditor qualification or equivalent assurance experience.
• Experience in supplier technical assurance, tender evaluation or mentoring engineers.

Security clearance:

Due to the nature of work to be undertaken applicants will be required to meet certain residency criteria in order to attain a minimum level of UK security clearance if not already security cleared to a minimum SC level.

This role has the flexibility to over see the team from home but will require visits to sites across the UK. It will be one to two times a month with an overnight stay.
