Overview

We are supporting a major engineering organisation delivering complex projects across regulated, safety-critical environments. They are seeking a Senior EC&I Engineer to provide technical leadership in the delivery of electrical, control and instrumentation engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects.

This role combines hands-on engineering delivery with technical oversight and coordination responsibilities. The successful candidate will lead the development of engineering solutions, provide technical guidance to project teams, and support the safe and compliant delivery of design outputs throughout the project lifecycle. While interfacing with Technical Authorities, Project Managers and other stakeholders, the role remains focused on engineering excellence rather than people or commercial management.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery & Design Leadership

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, review and delivery of EC&I engineering outputs, including:

  • Leading the production of detailed electrical engineering calculations, including:
    • Cable sizing and selection
    • Protective device coordination and discrimination studies
    • Load assessments and system analysis
    • Use of hand calculations and software tools such as Trimble ProDesign
  • Developing electrical, control and instrumentation designs for industrial and process plant applications.
  • Providing specialist electrical engineering support in relation to:
    • DSEAR assessments
    • Hazardous area classification
    • Interpretation and application of ATEX requirements
    • Equipment selection for hazardous environments
  • Preparing and reviewing electrical design documentation, including:
    • Single line diagrams
    • Schematics
    • Technical specifications
    • Design calculations
    • Engineering reports
  • Supporting multidisciplinary design activities and coordinating interfaces with Mechanical, Process and C&I disciplines.
  • Capturing, interpreting and translating client and stakeholder requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Supporting design reviews, constructability assessments and engineering assurance activities.

Safety, Risk & Compliance

  • Leading the completion of Designer Risk Assessments and contributing to design safety reviews.
  • Undertaking site surveys, inspections and engineering investigations.
  • Supporting Lightning Risk Assessments and mitigation strategies.
  • Providing technical input to DSEAR compliance activities.
  • Ensuring all designs are compliant with applicable legislation, standards, client requirements and industry best practice.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture throughout the design and delivery process.

Technical Assurance & Stakeholder Management

The Senior EC&I Engineer will provide technical oversight and act as a key interface between project and assurance functions by:

  • Working closely with Technical Authorities to ensure engineering solutions align with company standards and governance requirements.
  • Reviewing and approving technical deliverables within delegated authority limits.
  • Providing technical support to procurement activities, including:
    • Technical bid evaluations
    • Equipment selection and vendor management
    • Review and authorisation of Technical Query (TQ) responses
  • Supporting design reviews, hazard studies and project gate reviews.
  • Mentoring and providing technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, engineering standards and lessons learned activities.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience delivering EC&I engineering solutions within industrial, process, energy or infrastructure environments.
  • Demonstrable experience producing and reviewing electrical calculations and design documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Low Voltage (LV) electrical systems
    • Control and instrumentation systems
    • DSEAR and hazardous area engineering principles
    • Relevant British and international engineering standards
  • Experience operating within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ability to lead technical work packages and coordinate engineering activities across multiple stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Experience using Trimble ProDesign or equivalent electrical design software.
  • Experience working within regulated or safety-critical industries such as nuclear, defence, energy, petrochemical, water or pharmaceutical sectors.
  • Knowledge of ATEX equipment selection and hazardous area compliance.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution.
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status or progress towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Key Characteristics

  • Strong technical engineering capability with a hands-on approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to lead engineering activities without direct line management responsibility.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, safety and compliance requirements.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions in complex, regulated environments.
