Location: The office base is in Scotland. The role is flexible; the successful applicant can be based at any BBC office in Scotland, depending on role requirements.

BBC Scotland's TV news team seeks an experienced Senior Journalist to produce Reporting Scotland and the News at Seven.


Reporting Scotland is our flagship news program for BBC One, covering major stories with a team of presenters and reporters.


The News at Seven, launched earlier this year, airs after Reporting Scotland on BBC Scotland, focusing on issues affecting our audience, with analysis, interviews, community stories, and Scottish culture, in a conversational tone.


This role offers an opportunity to shape content for our audience. As a senior journalist, you will handle major news stories, guide a team, and produce programs. Technical training will be provided if needed. Key qualities include good news judgment, creativity, and enthusiasm.


The role involves shift work and weekend hours.


Main Responsibilities



  • Originate and produce stories, including scripting, editing, and outputting BBC content.

  • Commission and select materials that meet audience expectations and adhere to BBC editorial guidelines.

  • Allocate work, monitor progress, and ensure quality contributions from staff.

  • Deliver journalism of the highest standards within deadlines using available resources.


Are you the right candidate?

  • Strong editorial judgment, writing, and production skills with substantial broadcast journalism experience.

  • Ability to work effectively in multiple teams and resolve conflicts.

  • Resource management skills, including staff and technical facilities, to deliver cost-effective broadcasting.

  • Effective planning and prioritization considering deadlines and resources.

  • Creative writing skills, with the ability to adapt and produce accurate, clear, and engaging content for diverse audiences and media formats.

  • Flexibility and resilience under pressure, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.

  • Good understanding of the Scottish news agenda and audience interests.
